Our story

Africa is not our influence. It is our origin.

Afroriginal is a contemporary African fashion label from Johannesburg. We make clothing rooted in African identity and made for the way people live now — confident, considered and unmistakably from here.

The idea

Born from African soil.

Too often, Africa is treated as a mood board — a source of prints and patterns to borrow. We see it differently. Africa is contemporary, inventive and constantly moving, and it deserves a fashion label that comes from here rather than looking at it from a distance.

Everything we make starts with that idea: the places we come from, the land beneath them, and the people shaping African culture today.

What guides us

Three principles.

01

Rooted

Our references come from real places, people and stories across the continent — not from stereotypes of it.

02

Considered

We would rather make fewer pieces, and make them well. Every design has a reason to exist.

03

Forward

Heritage is a starting point, not a costume. We design for the Africa that is being built right now.

How we are starting

Starting small, on purpose.

Collection 01 is a small set of simple pieces — tees, sweats, a cap and a tote — each printed to order. It lets us grow without waste or excess stock, and keeps the focus where it belongs for now: on the graphics, the words and the ideas that define Afroriginal.

Where we are going

Our own silhouettes. Our own fabrics. Made here.

The long-term goal is original designs, prints and construction you could never find in a catalogue — produced in South Africa, in our own studio or with local makers. Every collection is a step towards it.
